Why did hiding PayPal from Express checkout also remove it from the payment list?

Shop Pay, PayPal, Apple Pay, and Google Pay appear in two places at checkout: the Express checkout row (top of the page) and the payment method list (after the address step).

When you hide one of these methods, Payflow offers three modes:

ModeWhat happensPlan
Hide completelyRemoved from Express and the payment listAll plans
Hide from Express checkout onlyRemoved from Express, stays in payment listShopify Plus
Hide from payment list onlyStays in Express, removed from payment listShopify Plus

On non-Plus stores, the only available option is Hide completely. If you hide PayPal intending to remove it from Express only, it disappears from the payment list as well — this is a Shopify platform restriction, not a Payflow limitation.

If PayPal vanished from your payment list after you hid it from accelerated checkout, check whether your store is on Shopify Plus. If not, you cannot selectively hide — it’s all or nothing.

  • Hide completely — removes the method everywhere.
  • Do not hide — keep the method in both places.

There is no workaround for selective Express hiding on non-Plus plans; Shopify does not expose that capability to Functions on standard plans.
